Good thread would actually be how many English players have been genuinely world class as it’s a terms given out far too often.
I would say Ashley Cole, Bobby Moore and Paul Scholes (Think that might cause debate) struggling after that.
Rooney?

The likes of Gerrard and Beckham should have been world class but probably weren’t - whereas we have a few now who could become so, Saka and Bellingham being prob the two most obvs

when i think of world class i view it as someone who could get into any team in the world and who can and regularly do change the game with a moment of brilliance.
there's been plenty of english players like that tbh. from my generation the best english players are probably: terry, ferdinand, cole, scholes, gerrard, lampard, rooney, shearer and kane just off the top of my head. there's probably a few others and a few more who could/should have been world class.

In addition to those mentioned (except T*rry, who is excluded for obvious reasons)...
Gordon Banks Jimmy Greaves Bobby Charlton Paul Gascoigne
And what about going back to black and white players.... Stanley Matthews, Tom Finney and possibly others?

I saw back end of career so maybe never saw best of him.

Gordan Banks certainly.
Gazza in his prime (pre-injury)
Hoddle was easily the most gifted English midfielder of his generation but never got much of a look in under Revie and Greenwood.
Greaves yes, just for his sheer prolificity in front of goal.

you think Shilton. I saw back end of career so maybe never saw best of him. Clemence kept Shilton out of the team in the '70s and early '80s so by that yardstick you'd have to include Clemence.

I was tempered suggest shearer Corbs i think the likes of shearer and even kane go under the radar a bit as they've either won no trophies or very few. kane i think is exceptional and would easily get 40+ goals/assists in a top top team

Kane not world class not even close according to transfermarkt he has played 427 games, scored 273 and assisted 63 for spurs. thats pretty world class to me and a better overall record than other world class strikers like drogba for example. i think people underrate him coz there's something about him that just doesn't seem right in footballing terms but stats don't lie

Kane would score 25 goals a season in any top side in the world, not sure what else you’ve got to do to be a world class goal scorer

In my lifetime, so about 86 onwards….
Gazza Rio Ferdinand Sol Campbell Ashley Cole
I think of current crop: Saka, Bellingham, Foden and Grealish will become world class.

Gazza was the last world class player we had imho. Thought some of our midfielders were class until I saw xavi and iniesta

Really Matty you making Lampard world class. I would say very good player but just short of the world class bracket.
Interesting thread like threads like this on general football
