I remember the time when he was sophisticatedly described as a "deep lying midfielder".

I hope we will go for Ben Watson or Sam Hutchinson instead, but if Tom Carrol has developed into a bit more forward minded player during his stay at Swansea, it could be that he is worth a try.

Ideally both Shania. With an extra defensively minded midfielder, Cameron and Ball can be freed up as defensive cover when required.

Tom Carroll can play very well in a Warburton team, but yes - we need players who can add a bit more pnysicality and steel to our team/squad, I feel.

We don't need beef in mf,we need creativity. One to feed our lacking strike force and 2 to keep us in possession so our missing defense has some breathing space. Steel on mf just leads to more bookings than tui

Carroll was a flop here before, never impressed after - even at Swansea who played the same way we are attempting to - so why are we looking at him? I've never been that bothered about our so called Tottenham connection but I'm beginning to wonder.

They come in a tad over budget...
Just because we can afford LTC wages doesn't make him a good investment. Back to the future never works out...

Problem is that we simply need one.. Agreed Shania, but more realistic perhaps to get two players, one with each attribute.

I am in the minority but quite liked Carroll when he was with us especially early on when playing with Faurlin. Lightweight yes but can pass the ball and considering how we now play I think him and Chair could strike a decent understanding as both can play pass and move football.

Need some muscle in there too mate. Amos is pretty lightweight too. I can't see Cameron being more than a bit part player this year which leaves Ball as our only real enforcer. I liked the idea of Josh Cullen but that rumour seems to have gone quiet.

He just never passed forwards everything was backwards and sideways. If he’s added a forward pass to his game then could be useful addition. But some of our best game play has been counter attacking so you need someone who looks up and plays forward

At the end of the day I trust warburton with the clubs wellbeing implicitly. If he fancies LTC then it’s alright by me. He’s not a terrible player by any stretch of the imagination and baring in mind warburtons style of attacking football if he sees to many crab passes he won’t put up with it. He’s 28 now and not a kid anymore. Maybe we can get a tune out of him

Who rarely gives the ball away and with a high pass completion rate, to play devil's advocate. Boring so often goes unnoticed, yes, but nevertheless an important cog in the wheel. Most good teams needs a player like that. Not all players are creative and always attacking minded.

He can at least hit a teammate with a pass. At times, players like i.e Tom Carroll, Ball and Cameron struggle with that. I will give him a chance.

Passing aside he's as hard as nails. An Iron Man. Him and Amos anchoring the midfield will protect our CBs like a Wall of Steel.

Dave Mac was suggesting that there might be 2 players inbound earlier in the week. I suspect it's Carroll though.
I'm neither particularly excited or concerned about this signing. Maybe Warburton can get something out of him. Talent has never been an issue with Carroll in my opinion, maybe he just needs to utilised and/or coached bit differently.
Out of interest, did anyone on here genuinely seen much of him whilst playing for Swansea? I'd not appreciated just how much game time he'd got in the Premier League until I checked his stats today. Not much in the way of assists or goals though, which is clearly a bit of a concern for a "creative" midfielder.
Need to give him the benefit of the doubt either way. If he comes good it's a masterstroke. If he doesn't, I really doubt we are breaking the bank to land him and he's a squad player.

True, his pass completation rate is high because he always makes the easiest pass downwards or sideways and because of that he slowens our forward play which isn't good for us. But now he has officially signed so hope he has improved and wish him good luck.
