Not in our budget unless Eze goes. Attack is more of an issue.

It's too late for Isaac, I fear. We already have Colback, Varane, Madsen, Field and EDB. Before we signed Madsen and Varane I would have said 100% yes, but I don't think his wages could be justified now.

If we can afford his wages I would have him back. Varane and Masen are new to the league, and while both have promise, it will take them a while to adept. Colback is walking a knife edge in most games, and EDB might not be quite up to it. So we only have Field who is a going to start every game.

He can't play for anyone but Newcastle until January anyway. Doubt very much any Championship side are gonna want to pick up his salary until December at the earliest.

Interesting. Would love Hayden and think he is the missing link. But it would leave some expensive players twiddling their thumbs like Varane and Saito so agree hard to justify with budgets.
also if we had:
Field Hayden
Dembele Masden Chair
It means playing Dembele on the right when he is better in the middle. As think Masden plays either left or central.

You have to question what Hayden has been up to. He was told ages ago that he would not feature for NU and would train with their development squad. He was after pay-off but probably pushed it too far and Newcastle played hard ball.
Now he is out of the game until January although there are some obscure places he could still go to play but at League 1 quality and nowhere near his salary.
2 ways to look at it - he has either shot himself in the foot or will end up a with a highly paid 3 month holiday - but then he is getting older and his chances of getting highly paid job will have dropped.
Personally think he is too late for us and too expensive. We have signed good players who will develop and will have a sell. on value.

I'd imagine he was prepared to sacrifice the 1st half of this season in favour of ensuring he gets paid up on the last 2 years of his Newcastle deal. Depending on what you believe, he's been reported as earning as much as 50 grand a week. I'd be surprised if we'd pay him much more that a third of that. As such, to simply walk away and sign for a Championship club he might be leaving 3 or 4 million quid on the table. Personally I'd be doing exactly what he's doing. Newcastle were daft enough to give him a 6 year deal. They need to accept that the player will never get another contract like this in his career and if they want him to leave, they need to pay him off to some extent.Â

If I were Newcastle I wouldn't pay him off in full. It would mean paying the salary in one go - a very significant sum. Works out slightly cheaper for them to pay it monthly. Am surprised they didn't loan him out tho. Even if a Championship club paid a third of the salary, say, its better than nothing. Doesn't suit anyone him just rotting in their reserves.

If he got it paid up and was a freebie, he would then (presumably) ask for less money. No way would someone walk away from millions, just to play a few extra games; even then, he might not play or get injured anyway.

Newcastle should have just loaned him out another season or paid up the difference between Hayden's current salary and what he was offered elsewhere. It's likely what they'll end up having to do to get him off the wage bill anyway. This type of stand off where they're paying his full salary for him to train with the ressies ain't helping anyone.

However long contracts can make sense amortisation wise (depending on how much you paid for the player - essentially, amortization = transfer fee of the player divided by the length of the contract). Not sure if the same principal can be applied to wages though.

I get the argument for longer contracts Hal. It's just a risky business. I can't see the logic in giving such a long deal to a player like Hayden. Save it for marquee signings that are likely to have resale value.

The general consensus which Is contrary to my original post seems to be that Hayden is doing the right thing and holding out for a massive pay day. Given that and our history of a few years back of signing players who were just in it for the money should we even be interested in signing him forgetting the lessons learned.
Interesting but pointless discussion really as there is no way we could afford him unless it was another loan heavily subsidised by Newcastle and that is not the direction the club is trying to move in.

Not sure I get your post Robin. You genuinely suggesting Hayden is some sort of money grabber for not wanting to walk away from the 5m quid left on his contract?
Not sure many players would. Especially at the stage of his career that Hayden is at.

Agreed - I do not blame the players but what I am saying is we blamed the club before for going after these players and no we (not me) want the club to do exactly the same thing or similar for Hayden and is he that good - he stood out in a wreck of a team when he joined last year but if he is that good someone would have taken him on.

Nobody is suggesting we pay him big money mate. Isn't that the crux of the issue? He's on great money right now and won't move here for the mediocre money we can offer him. This transfer is only viable if Newcastle pay him off or subsidise his salary to some extent.

Apparently the Hayden deal has been there to be done all transfer window. Problem is Newcastle don't wanna subsidise it to the extent they did last season. They want him off the books. But that's 2 years of 50 bags a week. Well out of our reach, and probably out of the reach of every club that would want him. Hopefully common sense prevails in January and we can get the deal done. Player like him would make a big difference.

I reckon we will see Hayden back should have been the first bit of business done and everything else done around that. Stuck in the reserves and not played a single minute this season, if I'm not mistaken? Content to just pick up his wages, but what a waste, especially at 29 and still at his peak.

I don't blame the player mate. He's getting 20 bags a week at best here. No sane man walks away from 3m quid worth of contract. Newcastle need to chuck him a handshake for the shortfall and the move happens.

Maybe there was a deal to be done somehow? think it always rested on his wages - a reported 50k a week mind you and don't think it's justifiable to criticise the club for not bringing him in given the outlay. lots of risk involved there, could have brought him in only for him to do a johansen or be perennially injured. we went for literally the next best option (analytics wise) with the hope it pays off and if it does? well the club will rightfully be lauded for it. all in all i agree with the clubs ethos AND everyone's points about being too european centric and maybe that we should have brought in some people who know the league already. i do think some of the signings will come good given time though and we'll all be happy come the end of it.
