Manning is a player I've been quite critical of in the past. I personally don't think he's good enough to play central midfield at this level, but after 2 very solid games at left back, could he be a genuine option instead of Bidwell?

On current form, and in a 4-3-3 - yes.

I'll withhold judgement myself until I'm seen him play left back against a stronger side. So far, he looks better there than he ever has in midfield for me though.

I like Manning. Got a lot of grit about him. Would hope he flourishes and can displace the haphazard Bidwell.

Part of a back four with back to back clean sheets. Bidwell for me is woeful and needs to have played his last game for us.

Good thread. I like Tarbs have not rated him and still think he comes up short in midfield but I can actually see him being fairly decent LB if coached. Would do less damage in that position
He’s been pretty good last two games so let’s see if that continues on Friday

Not a fan of Manning but even less of a fan of Bidwell. Give Manning more games there imo.

Manning`s focus is on the ball, not the player which is a plus one to one...(I should believe)

He'll get properly tested defensively against Derby, if he's still getting the nod at that point!

Blackburn Friday will be a good test to see if all the new-found hope we've invested in the players and manager is grounded in reality and this will apply to Manning particularly. A consistent run in the starting 11 and in that position should boost his confidence and I can see him claiming the left back position if he keeps on improving.

Way out of position most of the time but that can be taught. Better second half in front of the bench.

I rate manning - very harshly treated by McClaren just Like Smyth this year. He was a stand out player for Rotherham playing CM for them in the first half of the season and even scored a couple of goals.
He’s done well at LB but I think given some faith and a run of games he could be a decent player in the center of the park.

Think him and Leistner could be a very decent partnership. Furlong and Wallace will probably be the fullbacks with Rangel backup. Hope Manning gets a chance to impress at lb as well. Would prefer Manning in midfield when Luongo goes but agree he is a decent back-up for Wallace.

With Luongo, Freeman and Cousins all gone (or probably going) he's been thrust from the fringes of the squad to almost nailed on 1st 11. I hope he can step up to the mark!

If manning don’t cut mustard under his third manager do we accept he’s actually not all that and ship him on?

If manning don’t cut mustard under his third manager do we accept he’s actually not all that and ship him on? Surely it's make or break for him this year mate? I'm still unconvinced, as I know you are. But given the situation, I'm sure he will be given a chance.

I know you don't rate him Wests but assuming Warbs gives him a chance, I'd like to see him given a run in CM under the new manager and coach. One thing that can't be denied is he has scored goals for us from midfield.

i don't think any manager including ollie has properly given manning a run in the team but in the same breath where is his best position? with freeman off and luongo looking like he's heading out the door then you'd imagine manning would be a cm for us.
he's a very versatile player though either way who i think we'd be mad to get rid of.
big year for him this is and i hope he gets given a proper run in the side

I remember seeing him play centre mid against Huddersfield and left the game feeling he was well out of his depth. That said, he was a young lad thrown into the side. Hopefully he's come on a bit since then!

Manning is about the only midfielder I've seen in recent times that will actually try a forward pass. Certain starter for me.

I guess we'll see! Maybe Warbs can get something out of him, I've been disappointed with Manning in that position whenever I've seen him.

i think manning has earned his chance at LB. hes done a solid job there and has fit into our new style quite well. got a good cross on him too which is what we need.
its still a new position for him so he needs time to get experienced

I haven't seen enough of pre-season to really comment. But I think Manning did reasonably well when asked to play Left Back last season. I think (from what I've seen) I prefer him there to Central Midfield.

This confirms what I took from the meeting with MW. Wallace will be first choice once fit, but in the mean time he's very happy with Manning as deputy. His main strength being having a good left foot i.e. passing and crossing. Defensively he got turned quite easily vs Watford a couple of times, so we do need to be mindful of that.

Manning is utility. No one has really worked out what to do with him. His problem is exactly why you have to be careful about overstocking utility players, too many and no one knows their arse from their elbow on or off the park.
Having said that, LB is as good a shout as any. There is no way I'd start him as WB.
